Community Services

Shankar’s Eye Hospital is dedicated to serving the rural community by conducting free eye camps, cataract surgeries, and spreading awareness about eye care.

Shankar’s Eye Hospital is committed to enhancing eye care among rural populations by conducting free eye camps and cataract surgeries in remote villages. We received the ICICI Lombard award for the best hospital in community health service in 2015.

Camps are conducted every Sunday on the Hospital premises. All our units adhere to the policy of providing high-quality treatment to everyone, regardless of their financial status. Some of the highlights of our Community Ophthalmic services include:

  • Free slit lamp examination
  • Free medicines
  • Dilated examination
  • Free transportation for surgery patients
  • Pre-op evaluation at camp site
  • Free glaucoma & diabetic retinopathy checkup

In a developing country like India, the rural population still faces challenges in accessing quality eye care. Shankar’s Eye Hospital recognized this need early on and has established a system to identify patients in nearby villages with eye problems, bring them to the main hospital, perform surgeries, provide them with glasses, and return them to their homes free of cost. We also provide morning tea and snacks free of charge.

Our Mission

Our mission is to educate the community about avoidable blindness, conduct eye screening camps, and provide comprehensive eye checkups at our community centers.

Why Do We Need a Community Eye Care?

Community Eye Care services are beacons of hope dedicated to enhancing eye health and preventing visual impairment in local communities. Their impact is significant and resonates across multiple avenues:

  • Accessibility and Affordability: These camps cater to all communities, ensuring essential eye care services. The low-cost or free services ensure that no one is left without care due to financial limitations.
  • Comprehensive Eye Exams: Regular eye exams help catch and treat conditions early, preventing severe issues and preserving clear sight.
  • Treatment and Surgery: Community Eye Care camps address a wide range of eye conditions, from refractive errors like myopia and hyperopia to serious diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). They also offer surgical interventions to restore sight and hope to those in need.
  • Awareness and Education: These camps educate the public about the importance of eye health, empowering individuals to protect their vision and seek timely care.
  • Early Detection and Prevention: With a focus on early detection, Community Eye Care plays a vital role in preventing the progression of debilitating eye diseases. By catching conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy early, they offer a chance for effective management and a brighter future.
